“IT doesn’t keep you warm” at atlanta contemporary

In January 2023 “It Doesn’t Keep You Warm” by Kate Burke opened to the public at Atlanta Contemporary. I curated this exhibition and wrote this statement to accompany the work,

When you enter the Secret Garden, you meet the eyes of humans denied their bodily autonomy when Roe v. Wade (1973), which guaranteed a constitutional right to abortion, was overturned.
Instead of presenting her political opinion, Kate offers the opposite of propaganda. She is creating an opportunity to make eye contact with real people.

Her inquisitive approach to the subject matter depressurizes a tinderbox topic, disarming you with tenderness. Kate is allowing us to think about how we truly feel. Kate wants to remove the outside world’s influence for the viewer to enter a judgment-free zone.

“Into me, I see” at Echo Contemporary

In December 2021, I curated an art exhibition at Echo Contemporary titled “Into Me, I See.” The show featured nine South East artists exploring a range of emotions, from shame and unrequited love to finding joy and acceptance. Atlanta Magazine published an article about the exhibition, and art sales exceeded expectations.

atlanta contemporary shop

As curator of the gift shop at The Atlanta Contemporary Arts Center it is my joy to bring attention to local and national artists, makers and writers. I swap out vendors each season while changing the physical SHOP space to reflect the theme I have chosen to work around. Past themes have been “A Woman’s Place in an Art Gallery” and “Contemporary Love.”

Since I was hired, sales have increased over 1000%

“Multitudes” at freemarket

In October 2021 I curated Freemarket's most successful show to date, bringing together 15 female-identifying artists of different backgrounds to create works of art that explored the conflicting multitudes that they contain as women.

Georgia writers ASSOCIATION

“Don't Ghost Your Own Writing! Creative PR and Marketing for Creatives” was the first writing workshop that I have taught for The Georgia Writers Association.

I wrote the curriculum, worksheets and presented over Zoom. There was a live Q&A after my hour long presentation.

Wednesday walk series at Arts ATL

My social media arts coverage for ARTSATL.org had me twirling on stage at the fabulous Fox Theater, thumbing the pages of a first edition Kerouac novel at A Cappella Books and sound-checking with singer-songwriters on the fire escape of Eddies Attic. My first idea was to learn how to take a dynamic “selfie” with photographer Jaquan Cummings, and it was an experience I will never forget.

Creating fresh and exciting content that resonated with ARTSATL’s audience was incredibly rewarding and allowed the magazine to reach a different demographic. I helped people to live more artfully in Atlanta every day.

Gpb+ KQED Bob Ross paint-along

Georgia Public Broadcasting approached me to be the host of a virtual Bob Ross Paint along with a certified instructor.

Learning a script and taking live audience questions was a new venture for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and both media stations were thrilled with the episode and audience turnout.

Living walls

The project “Signs of Solidarity” was spearheaded by Living walls; The City Speaks. Over 30 Atlanta artists, makers and business owners displayed banners displaying messages of love and inclusivity to stand in opposition to hate and in protest of any and all that embolden divisiveness.

My sign, “You Are Magic” was a reminder to all of those who saw it that they are powerful and they are capable of creating their own destiny.

summer+soundtrack

soundtrack to summer

Curating an art show for Coco+Mischa based around the idea of getting in a vintage Mustang and heading to the beach made for a truly entertaining and emotional show. Each artist created an original art piece invoking the lyrics of their favorite summer song.

Artemis

Artemis at Mindzai

"Artemis: Beauty Untold/ Celebrating Women in Art" showcased the work of a select group of Atlanta female artists, all telling the same story; ALL WOMEN ARE WARRIORS.
These talented artists carried the torch of enlightenment and empowerment and were ready to tell the tales of their unique experiences through art.

This show was a huge success, it added a new audience to the Castleberry Hill Art Stroll and gained the attention of local press.

uneasy

I curated “Uneasy” at Parlor ATL after a close friend committed suicide. I set out to question our online personas by tapping into our insecurities. The show had an incredible roster of artists that created work specifically for the show including Charlie Watts, Barry Lee, Nicole Kang, Vek Neal, Janice Rago and Jessica Locklar.

Through vulnerability true connection was made and healing began.
